Moved to a self hosted WordPress blog – my thoughts
Hi all,
For those who have been following.. I’ve moved my blog to a self hosted server. I registered a domain, downloaded their software and following the 5 minute instructions. I was surprised by how easy it was to do and I’m no web guru at all!
Everything is nice and there is a big community of people who develop extra software (widgets, plugins etc). I’ve customised everything which is great!
Whilst the free version is good and hosted on WordPress own servers, it can be limited if you see the power that the WordPress complete package has.
I like how you can completely recustomise the themes you download, you can completely change the graphics.. however, there are thousands or themes available so you should be able to find one that you like. Also, there are many many plugins which make things easier for you.
Also, there’s the sponsorships and Google Adsense if you want to make your website earn some cash for you. Since yesterday, I’ve had a few visitors and made a few bucks already so it does work!
However, the biggest negative point about having your own hosted site is that WordPress no longer register your site in their directory. This means that your punters and readers can’t find you readily.. instead, you have to go and register your blog with the blog directories.. I’m still not sure how to make it available on the WordPress directory… if possible.
